Is content all that's needed ?

I go to watch a film and I really need the movie to connect with me and keep me guessing. Is that all that I need these days?
Probably not, I mean if the actors are doing a shit-house job then I'll end up commenting on how poorly they performed but if the content is good that will be a big plus!!
I suppose the question is: what part of the movie does it for you ??

The actual plot of a movie intrests me less then just about everything. I like visual style, seeing new things and the such. If I had to pick one thing that would make or break a film for me it has to be dialogue. If a script has good lines, and dialogue that sounds real then I'll like it, unfortunatley I find myself rolling my eyes as most dialogue, like that found in Pearl Harbor.
Also over use of special effects annoys me to no end, Pearl Harbor and Behind Enemy Lines were so in-your-face action oriented it drove me insane.

rule of thumb: if you can evoke two emotions from your audience (eg laughter, suspense) you have made a good film.

if you can evoke three or more emotions during the course of the film, you have made a true great.

I dunno, people laughing during the Exorcist might not have been a good thing, on the other hand I couldn't stop giggling during Hannible.

I thought the main reason for making a movie was to tell a story. So shouldn't the reason what makes a movie good be, the better you tell that story, the better the movie.
That means laughing at a horror should be out of the question. Unless the creator wanted that effect.

Not directly related but I just watched the DVD of Superman. This is a film I liked in the cinema as a kid but had kind of dismissed over the last 15 years or so.

There is a great bit of restrained dialogue when Superman appears to the public and performs a rescue for the first time. After rescuing Lois Lane she, in shock, asks 'who are you?'. Instead of a bit of cheesy on-the-nose dialogue from him explaining that he's from another planet and that he has super powers and his name is Superman etc etc etc he simply says 'A friend' and flies off.

A perfect example of less is more.

"bad taste" had sorta poor dialog and there werent any proper actors in it but it was awesome because it used the resuorces it had e.g it wasnt zombies cus they would have been to hard to dress up so it was aliens that can look like humans etc
